Could either of you go for supper tonight? I've only an hour, I'm afraid, because I'm working. Or we could go for drinks when I finish. I think I could meet you at The Hedgepig by half-ten.

Only I really need to talk to you both. Something happened at supper last night--my parents' big gathering before the Opera. You were right, Sarah, when you saw me at the interval: I was terribly upset. And trying not to show that.

Oh, I don't know! Honestly. You have to tell me what I should do.

I mean, they'd drawn up the dowry parchments and signed between them before they ever told me.

Vani, you know I told you Ned was so out of sorts last weekend and I thought it was because I'd asked you to meet us for supper when he'd wanted to see me alone? And, fair enough, we're almost never completely alone. And then Whitacre's party should have been a time, but there were so many people and we were just thronged. Even the sleighing wasn't private--we went in great sledges with four couples in each. And it was wonderful, but Ned seemed so put out, and I thought maybe he was angry with me. Or worse.

I nearly fainted when Papa stood up last night with everyone there and told them all I'm to marry. And they all welcomed Ned to the family.

And I was supposed to be so pleased.

Well, no. I was supposed to be overcome with happiness.

And I don't know what I was instead. Only. It's not what I expected at all.

I'm sorry, Ned. I didn't realise you wanted time alone last night or I wouldn't have told Vani to meet us at Blaison.

But we'll be together again tonight, and it's sleighing! I can't wait to see how Whitacre's got up the hunting lodge, too. I think it sounds so charming. And romantic, too. I mean to say, Epping Forest is lovely this time of the year, all wrapped up in snow.

I'll expect you at half-five, and we'll Apparate together.

Now, we do need to get our diaries straight for the coming weeks. Wright knows that I plan to accompany you to the Malfoys on the 23rd, and there's the St Mungo's gala, but I'm not going to be able to make the Philharmonic, I'm afraid, or the Consort's programme on the 11th, which I'd really hoped we'd be able to hear. (That's all right, though, as they're playing for Papa's festivities at the store, so we'll hear them there. You are able to come for that, aren't you? On Wednesday.)

Do you have any conflicts with Mama's supper before the Opera on the 10th? (Do try to make supper even if you have to meet Mr Crouch later; it would mean so much to my parents if you were there. But. If it's a choice between that and twelfth night with my grandparents, you know TN's much more important, right? Abuelita is still so fragile, but they're determined not to break tradition.)

Then there are two potential conflicts: on the 9th, Sophia Novello's having a soiree and one doesn't like to offend Whirl's society writer, and accepting might mean she'll give more space to Papa's guests on Wednesday. So I've said yes, but the Faust-Mackrells have also invited us that night, and, of course, Jacqueline Mackrell's important. I know Mr Crouch will expect you to be there, and it will be packed with people from the department. So we'll just have to juggle a bit that night.

It'll be a bit easier on the 16th, which is Sarah's gallery party, but Bobolis has also invited us for cocktails. I hear his penthouse is amazing, so we shouldn't miss that. We can stop in there and go on to Sarah's as soon as it's polite to run off.

We've also the MLE gathering and the Ministry party to attend, but for those, schedule isn't an issue. If either of us is on duty, it'll be an excuse to just pop in and out, and that's all that's really necessary for those.

Oh, and there's the Yaxley's party on Boxing Day. Are you able to make that?

And I'm still poking Orion about having something small at ours, too: if we made that the 18th, could you be there?

Let me know about these dates, will you? And I'll see you at half-five!

If you're here by half-four, we'll have loads of time to dress and do ourselves up. Madam Chalfont has promised to arrive by five with her helpers. She's done something different with my hair each night this week--it's really amazing how much volume she can create and what fine details. And there are so many beautiful styles from the period to choose from!

It's been an awesome week, too. So much fun to see it all with Ned. And to see him in doublet and hose. Well.

We started at the bear-baiting arena yesterday and then went on to the New Paris Gardens, but that was a bit much with all the brothel bait. There was a play in the forecourt of one of the ale-houses, the Three Mackerels, so we watched Hansel and Gretel help the forest sprite foil their father's plan to clear all the trees and make a bowling green for his new wife. Everyone cheered when the evil stepmother got pushed in the oven. It was really well done by the children and staff of the Richmond village school.

And it made me think, Vani: you'd be so good, teaching in a primary. I really hope you're still considering it.

Anyway, we had supper last night at this gorgeous Moorish restaurant at the edge of the Protector's Square called Sala de los Abencerrajes. The hangings of the pavilion depicted Boabdil's infamous banquet. So beautiful and so tragic! The food was as ravishing as the setting, and I hear that the chef is gathering financing to open a restaurant. I've told Papa he should absolutely see it done.

I've worked two nights and one day shift in the Faire, and what a different view of things that gives one! We've caught seventeen pickpockets--only two of them clever enough to claim they were hired to act the part by the Faire's organising committee. The committee have, admittedly, taken verisimilitude to a high level for this event, but they did draw the line at hiring actual thieves and ruffians.

My most interesting assignment was to have an appointment at Mr Maule's Sironaean Emporium. I spent all of Thursday being pampered and evaluated for the advanced range of their services--imagine having that count as work! You'll be amused to know they did not recommend that I try their reducing programme.

Oh, Sarah. Criada's just come up to say that your robes have been delivered. I've got Vani's, too, so everything's ready whenever you arrive.

There's loads more to tell you both, but I can do that this evening, can't I?
